History

Kendra Saunders was born in 1980, the grand-daughter of 1940's adventurer "Speed" Saunders. Orphaned as a young girl, she had a troubled youth, bouncing through a series of state-run facilities.  Kendra was adopted by her grand-father a teen-ager and encouraged to follow her dream to become a film student. In 1999, when the Dark Lord forced the surviving members of the Justice Society to re-group, Speed Saunders encouraged his grand-daughter to don his cousin's wings and aide his old comrades. In
the course of doing so, Kendra adopted the guise of Hawkgirl. When the JSA formally reorganized, she took the name permanently and became a founding member of the new JSA (JSA Secret Files and Origins #1, JSA #1-4).
    Hawkgirl's troubled past, involving drug use and suicide attempts, continuing to be a mystery and source of friction for the Justice Society. In 2001, an angry encounter with team leader Sand led Hawkgirl into the path of the archarngel Zauriel, a fomer JLA member. Zauriel counseled the confused heroine and revealed to her that a suicide attempt in the late 1990's had in fact been successful, resulting in Kendra's death. The body of Kendra and the physical memories of Kendra were rekindled by the soul of Shiera Hall, her great aunt and the deceased Golden Age Hawkgirl. The confusion and anger Kendra had experienced recently was due to discontinuities between Shiera's personality and the former occupant of the body, Kendra Saunders (JSA #21). The awakening of Kendra-Shiera's awareness led to the capture of Hawkgirl by Thanagarians hoping to revive the greatest hero of that world, Hawkman. The outcome of this remains to be seen.
 

Powers/Skills

Hawkgirl uses a pair of wings composed of a material alternately called the Nth Metal or Ninth Metal. This substance defies gravity, permitting its wearer the power of flight. She is also skilled in a variety of martial arts techniques, which she uses in a manner choreographed to her flight.

Weaknesses/Limitations

Hawkgirl, without her gear, is a mortal woman and can be slain or injured as such.
