Multiversity

This section provides information on the variation of character interpretations both pre-Crisis and in iterations since Crisis.  Focus is on characters defined by their given name (Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, etc.) rather than code name (Green Lantern, Flash).  Emphasis is on interpretations where the character had a major role versus a cameo or non-essential story role to minimize clutter.

The Golden Age Batman

Earth-One

The Batman if this Earth has a similar origin as his Earth-Two counterpart, shifting roughly twenty years in the future.   Key differences in their careers include the maturation of Dick Grayson into Nightwing, the replacement of Robin by Jason Todd (Batman #357) and some unique villains (so far as known) such as Ra’s al Ghul, Killer Croc, Mister Freeze, Bane and Poison Ivy.  The Commissioner Gordon of this world has a daughter, Barbara, who becomes Batgirl as part of Batman’s crime fighting team (Detective #359).  Characteristically, the Batman of Earth-One is noted for a yellow oval around the Bat emblem on his uniform, but is otherwise identical to his Earth-Two counterpart in appearance.  He was a founding and active member of the Justice League of America until right before the Crisis on Infinite Earths, in which he formed a splinter group called the Outsiders (The Brave and the Bold #200).   He was active on Earth-One up until Crisis on Infinite Earths but his final fate on this earth is unknown.

Prior Earth-0

The Batman of the Post-Crisis timeline Earth has a history similar to his Earth-One counterpart. Beyond the chronological variations, this version of Batman also suffered the loss of his second Robin when Jason Todd was murdered by the Joker (Batman #426-429).  Tim Drake assumed the role of Robin shortly thereafter (Batman #436). He has an more off and on relationship with the Justice League, though he had a major role in its first international incarnation (Justice League International #1).  A major foe new to this timeline is Bane (Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1), who ultimately broke his back (Batman #497).  The Batgirl of this timeline is ultimately critically injured and reduced to paraplegia in this time (Batman: The Killing Joke), become the coordinator Oracle.  Many other features (his rogue’s gallery, his supporting cast) are similar to his Earth-One counterpart.

Earth-2

On the new Earth-2, Bruce Wayne becomes Batman after the presumed murder of both of his parents and begins a career as Batman, one of the Wonders of Earth-2.  Bruce is killed repelling Darkseid's invasion of Earth-2 and his father is revealed to be alive, disgraced from the criminal connections that led to his wife's murder (Earth-2 Annual #1). Thomas Wayne then takes up the mantle of Batman, continuing in the role until he is killed on the planet Telos following the destruction of Earth-2.  Dick Grayson, who had never been Robin on this Earth, assumed the role until he is killed by the Earth-2 Ultra-Humanite.  Helena Wayne then assumed the Batman name and  replaced him.

Earth-Three/3

Through various reboots, the timeline labeled three is the home to Owlman of the Crime Syndicate (Justice League of America #29-30, JLA: Earth-2 HC, Crime Syndicate LS).  The general theme of these iterations is that Bruce Wayne is killed as a youth, alongside his parents. His brother Thomas, unique to this timeline, becomes a dark and somewhat nihilistic avenger named Owlman, accompanied by a sidekick Talon and opposed by foes such as the Jokester and the Quizmaster.

Earth-10

The Batman of Earth-10 is a Nazi government agent and descendent of Hans Von Hammer known as Leatherwing (Final Crisis Secret Files #1, Multiversity: Mastermen). His history is as yet unrevealed, tho he may have been killed on this earth with the Freedom Fighters destroyed the satellite headquarters of the New Reichsmen.

Earth-11

The role of Batman on Earth-11 is consistent with the probability variance in that world's history which reversed the predominance of the female gender. Batwoman (Bryce Wayne) was born approximately 30 years ago and is a member of that world's Justice League (Search for Ray Palmer: Superwoman/Batwoman #1).

Earth-12

Bruce Wayne of Earth 12 was born approximately 30 years ago and has had a career largely similar to that of the Batman of Earth-0 but survived well into the 21st century. In the middle part of the 21st century, Batman retired and passed his mantle to a young successor named Terry McGinnis, who continues his legacy (Batman Beyond LS).

Earth-19

The Bruce Wayne of Earth-19 was born in or around 1860 in the United States. When his parents were murdered, he committed himself to a life of fighting crime using a secret identity and has run afoul of Jack the Ripper (Batman: Gotham by Gaslight) and Alexander Le Roi (Batman: Master of the Future). In subsequent adventures, he took up a partnership with the Blue Beetle of Earth-19 (The Search for Ray Palmer: Gotham by Gaslight).

Earth-21

The Batman of Earth-21 was born in a similar time frame and encounter similar foes as the Batman of Earth-2. The principle difference between the Batmen of Earths 2 and 21 is the largely underground nature of the Batman of Earth-21's career. He was never a member of the Justice Society and neither Superman nor Wonder Woman had met him prior to the 1950's and the alien assault from the force known as The Centre. His ultimate fate since that time is unrevealed (DC New Frontier LS).

Earth-22

The Batman of Earth-22 was born in the late 1940's and had a long and healthy career. In the early part of the 21st century, Batman is largely retired following his partial paralysis from a beating from Bane after his secret identity was uncovered. He continued his mission using a series of Batman robots to patrol Gotham. He forms a resistance movement to the Superman's efforts to control metahuman activity after the death of Captain Atom and the destruction of Kansas. He led a team of heroes in final battle against Superman and his forces that was ultimately ended by the decision of the world government to destroy the vast majority of metahumans with a nuclear explosion. Batman survived and became the godfather to the children of Superman and Batman (Kingdom Come LS). He died in the middle part of the 21st century, survived by his son Ibn al Xu'ffasch (JSA Vol. 3 #22).

Earth-29

A Batzarro/Bizarro Batman appears on various multiversal incarnation of the cubed shaped Bizarro Htrae, a derivation known as Wayne Bruce.  This hapless character has distorted motives and succeeds at them about as much as any of the characters in this timeline.

Earth-30

The Batman of Earth 30 was born in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in the late 1940's. Seeing his dissident parents murdered by agents of the Soviet Dictator Kal-L, he becomes a vigilante agent of the Soviet Underground, until he is lured in an effort to overthrow Superman by factions within the Kremlin. When the trap goes awry, Batman kills himself to avoid capture (Superman:Red Son LS)

Earth-32

The Batman of Earth-32 was born approximately 30 years ago and was ultimately inducted in the Green Lantern Corps. His vigilante ethics eventually forced him to become a solo operative, albeit retaining his power ring (Batman: In Darkest Knight LS).

Earth-37

The Batman of Earth-37 was born in the early 1940's to wealthy parents who were murdered by their servants, reducing young Wayne to poverty. He devoted himself to fighting crime, using the Gotham Police Force as his primary mechanism and advancing to the rank of Detective by the early 1960's. When the costumed vigilante known as Robin is killed by the mob boss Bianca Steeplechase, Wayne joins his partner Batgirl as a new Batman and breaks up the Steeplechase gang. After the death of Steeplechase, he succeeds Jim Gordon as Commission of the Gotham Police and retires the Batman identity. Whether it remained and retired and his ultimate fate are unknown (Thrillkiller LS).

Earth-40

Bruce Wayne of Earth-40 was born in 1915 and during the second world war, became a government agent known as The Bat (JSA: The Liberty File).. He maintained this identity until at least 1948 (JSA: The Unholy Three LS), though his ultimate fate is unknown. During the Final Crisis, he was snatched out of Earth-40's history to participate in Monarch's Arena Contest and turned into a vampire by the Batman of Earth-43 (Countdown Arena LS). Whether this event is canonical after termination of The Final Crisis by Superman's use of the Miracle Machine is unknown and seems unlikely. As this world is eventually over-run by Vandal Savage's Society of Super-Villains, it is likely the legacy of Batman is gone (Multiversity: Society of Super-Heroes).

Earth-43

Bruce Wayne of Earth-43 was born approximately 30 years ago in the United States. After an encounter with Dracula, Batman was infected with vampirism which he struggled to contain (Batman: Red Rain). He ultimately failed with the Joker tricked him into consuming human blood, activating his full vampiric potential (Batman: Bloodstorm). The undead Batman vacillated from noble purpose to the baser tendencies of the vampire, allowing himself to be impaled to stop his rampages to using his vampiric powers against evil. He recruited Dick Grayson, in the form of Robin the Boy Wonder, as a vampiric partner to avenge his parents (The Search For Ray Palmer: Red Rain). He was believed kidnapped by Monarch for participation in the Arena event  (Countdown Arena: #1-4) leading up to the Final Crisis but whether this event remains historically canonical after use of the Miracle Machine to end Final Crisis is unlikely. In one possible future, he is fated to fully succumb to his vampiric tendencies, murdering all of his old villains and a few of his old friends before finally being completely destroyed by sunlight (Batman: Crimson Mist).
