Personal information
Real Name: Miya Shimada
Residence: California
Occupation: Japanese Agent
First Appearance (Post-Golden Age): All-Star Squadron #33 (May 1984)
Character History
Little is known of the early life of Miya Shimada. It is known that she was born in California in the 1920's, the daughter of first-generation immigrants to the United States from Japan. At some point in the 1930's, she became disenchanted with like in the United States and deeply affected by anti-Japanese sentiment in the years leading up to World War II. She left the U.S. and spent years "studying" in Japan, tho it is not clear what these studies entailed. It is known by the early 1940's, she had been fully indoctrinated in the anti-Western sentiments of the Japanese government and returned to the U.S. in 1942 as a Japanese agent.
Her first action was to be involved in the capture of Army Intelligence officer Rick Cannon whom she took as a prize back to her home community in Santa Barbara. She taunted her fellow nissei - American born children of Japanese parents - to reject American prejudice and serve the agenda of the Japanese emperor. She revealed her new identity as Tsunami just as the arrival of Starman and Liberty Belle brought them there in pursuit of the captured Cannon. The heroes engaged in a brief melee, finding Tsunami enormously strong and resilient and at its peak, she hurled a stack of large crates at them, which was intercepted by an elderly Japanese who caught the brunt of the impact. Recognizing the victim, Tsunami fled and has he faded, the old man revealed himself as Tsunami's father.
Returning to her base of operations on a Japanese sub off-shore, she
discovers that other members of the All-Star Squadron - Johnny Quick and
Neptune Perkins - had been captured. After Tsunami's attempts to
convince the commander that they be returned to Japan for study,
Starman, Firebrand and Liberty Belle arrive to free their comrades and
in the ensuing battle, the sub is destroyed. As Johnny and Belle rise
to the surface and cling to a buoy for safety, Tsunami rises from the
depths to attack them. Creating a massive wave to smash them, she is
stymied by an energy field from Starman's gravity rod and outnumbered,
she retreats below the waves. The heroes return to shore where Tsunami
resolves to attack them with an even great wave but as it forms, she is
yanked below by Neptune Perkins who struggles with her. She finds
herself attracted to him but castigating herself, flees to return to
Japan (All-Star Squadron #33-35).
Tsunami again encountered the All-Star Squadron in league with Prince Daka, a ruthless Japanese scientist targeting Starman's gravity rod. Using Daka's new technology to render objects invisible, Tsunami joined Daka and two other agents - Sumo and Kung - to infiltrate the Perisphere headquarters of the Squadron in New York. There they found Starman, Robotman, Amazing Man, the Tarantula, Firebrand and Liberty Belle. Using the element of surprise afforded by their invisibility, the quickly dismembered Robotman and attacked the remaining members. Eventually, all of the heroes were defeated and Daka retrieved the Gravity Rod. The Prince then ordered the heroes executed.
Shocked at the order, Sumo and Tsunami hesitate, bound a Bushido code that requires honor in combat. Kung takes Daka's part and Sumo eventually relents but before they can act, the Guardian arrives and re-starts the battle. The din awakens the other All-Stars and Tsunami is rendered unconscious. The battle ends in a stalemate with Kung, in the form of a snake, captured Liberty Belle as a hostage. The Japanese retreat with the demand to return Tsunami and the Gravity Rod or Liberty Belle will die. After some internal dissent on how to proceed, the All-Stars take up the chase. They battle Sumo, Kung and Daka but Tsunami discovers that Daka has arranged a double-cross to kill the heroes even if they hold up their end of the bargain. Daka, Sumo and Kung are eventually repelled and Liberty Belle rescued but Tsunami, disgusted with Daka's immortality flees on her own (All-Star Squadron #42-43).
The final fate of Tsunami on Earth-Two is unknown.
Powers and Abilities
Tsunami had vast super-human powers, the basis of which are unknown. Her affiliation with Japanese factions engaged in martial experimentalism suggest that may the product of bio-engineering rather than inherent mutation but this is unknown with any certainty. Tsunami's primary ability was hydrokinesis - the ability to mentally control the movement of water. This generally manifested as large tidal waves but there is some evidence small volumes could likewise be manipulated. The range and limit of this ability is not known. Additionally, Tsunami possessed adaptations for prolonged periods underwater included super-strength, super-speed (especially when swimming) and the ability to breathe underwater. The upper limits of these adaptations is also unknown.
Weaknesses and Limitations
As Tsunami's powers are poorly understood, her limitations are likewise unknown. The best documented is opposition by super force. While she could move large volumes of water, the water itself had no special characteristics and could be dispelled by energy or physical objects. While highly resilient, she was not invulnerable and caught off guard by sufficient strength, could be rendered unconscious or injured. Her limitations in terms of duration of effect of her abilities is not clear.
Multiversity
Prior Earth-0
The history of Miya Shimada in the Post-Crisis timeline is thought to be essentially identical to her Earth-Two counterpart. She eventually re-forms and joins the Young All-Stars, a junior group mentored by the All-Star Squadron (Young All-Stars #1-31).
After the war, her relationship with Neptune Perkins culminated and they were wed. The conceived a daughter who they named Debbie, tho the girl's true paternal lineage has been called into doubt and suggested to be Atlan, an ancient Atlantean Wizard. She later divorced Perkins who left the water to live on land and become the U.S. Senator from Hawaii. The daughter eventually adopted the code-name Deep Blue and became one of Aquaman's network of allies (Aquaman Vol. 5 #23-25).
The fate of Tsunami in this timeline is unknown.
